Hey! Update from Portland!
I am meeting up with Darcy tomorrow after school, and I am really looking forward to meeting her! I am so glad that you put her here in the list even though she was a lone person from PDX. Yay PLC!
I am two weeks into my new job in Portland Public Schools and I have never, ever been a happier teacher. I am teaching three classes of seventh-grade Spanish (first time in Spanish for them, and it is such a treat to teach the “uncut block”), one class of first-year, seventh-grade French, and one class of second-year, eighth-grade French.
The first-year kids are doing great, I am training their behavior from the ground up and loving every minute. The 8th grade French kids are struggling with their self-esteem and managing their behavior. I attribute this to their instruction last year, from a recently-retired traditionalist. It is SO TELLING how different the new way is from the old way…these kids are in need of a French Intervention!! Well, I am trying my best daily but they were allowed to develop some poor learning habits last year. Much harder to unlearn an old habit than to start strong and build new, good habits.
So glad that I have this PLC and your books to guide me, Ben. Since I started following your blog back in 2008, I have learned SO MUCH and it has made my professional life SO AWESOME! Thank you!
