Teachers Cheat

In case you missed it, this appeared in a Yahoo! News article this morning:
“Award-winning gains by Atlanta students were based on widespread cheating by 178 named teachers and principals, said Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal on Tuesday. His office released a report from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation that names 178 teachers and principals – 82 of whom confessed – in what’s likely the biggest cheating scandal in US history.
“This appears to be the largest of dozens of major cheating scandals, unearthed across the country. The allegations point an ongoing problem for US education, which has developed an ever-increasing dependence on standardized tests.
“The report on the Atlanta Public Schools, released Tuesday, indicates a “widespread” conspiracy by teachers, principals and administrators to fix answers on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT), punish whistle-blowers, and hide improprieties.”

  1. On a smaller scale, and with respect to those in the camps (my mother was one), I can compare the above to Nazi Germany. People ended up turning away from doing what is right under pressure from others in charge. Why? To curry favor and be approved of. When one does that, when one tends to work in a kind of blind obedience to those in charge, where focusing on test results is the norm, they lose their way with the children. Rather, by keeping our focus on the process and not the result, which we must do in our classrooms based on comprehensible input, we avoid thinking like the teachers who have lost their way above.

  2. This article was the first thing I read this morning. I don’t identify myself as cynical, but the first thought I had was, “I wonder why it took until now to uncover widespread cheating? r”, and, “Boy, I bet there is a lot more cheating to be uncovered”. The wave of “reform” has it’s consequences. No?

  3. My sister was just telling me about her husband’s report (he graded AP Math exams last year) that it was clear there was widespread cheating on that exam. Her husband said statistics showed that in schools where the AP teacher-graders worked, there were nearly 100% “5” grades on the AP Math exam, and in schools where there was not a teacher-grader, there were about 5% grades of “5.” He quit grading, because it was clear to him that the NCB is making enough money on this racket that they weren’t going to do anything about the problem.

  4. Heck that cheating liar Brown got made Secretary of Education so he could bring “the Texas miracle” to the whole nation. I felt like one of the only people in the whole country who was appalled. He came to speak at ACTFL and there were a bunch of attendees who “ooh and ahh”ed at his feet as if he were more than worthless..
This has been going on for years and high-stakes testing is the root cause. But I am grumpy so I will stop.
