Report from the Field – Cheryl Cowherd

Cheryl reports from Connecticut:

I had a great experience Friday at a World Language meeting!  I have been working with the same group of teachers for quite a while, and while I am the only CI practitioner, several come down on the communication side of what I think of as the “old way”.  At this meeting, I spent nearly the whole afternoon session with my French counterpart from the other middle school in the district, and we spent it with her drilling me on “how to do what you do”.  She has observed me before, we have talked a lot, and she is doing a bunch of reading now, looking for things she is comfortable doing now, and planning to “do it” next year!! Another wants to visit sooner; she hasn’t seen me before, and is really interested in taking the next step.  This feels like such a victory for us all; I just had to share!

    Way to go Cheryl!
    The two other french teachers in my school both came and observed me and say they love it and have been doing some version of TPRS/TCI sometime . I haven’t seen them so I can’t really judge but they are still talking grammar talk quite a bit so it tells me they don’t fully get it. I guess all we can do is keep on modeling, communicating in a friendly collegially kinda way and hoping one day it’ll sink in.

  2. Congratulations – that’s great news on a Monday morning! The more of these comments I read on here (about spreading the word/action in such a positive way), it seems like what started out as a ripple in the pond is slowly turning into a tsunami.
