  1. Ben, I am so grateful that you are simple and elegant with your writings and musings on this PLC. I have been meeting with parents during this Open House. There have been some hurtful comments being made by parents that do not help me become a better “language parent”. Too many backward-ass concepts on language. However, there is more good than bad. The majority of parents have been positive and I have been extra giving by showering praise to my students that come with their parents. I had a French 1 student write a 231 word freewrite in 10 minutes. Other students showing incredible language gains with OWI, invisible stories and Story Listening. So none of the negativity matters. People want fast-food to eat to be healthy — They will never be. I will continue to provide them with super-CI-food.

Ben, I just finished reading “A Natural Approach to Stories.” I think now I’m armed and ready!

In the course I will begin teaching next month, I plan to begin the classes with Story Listening. That’s a pretty thorough presentation of it in the back of your book. Today I joined the FB page on Story Listening.

I watched some demonstration videos, and it raised a question for me. Is it standard practice in SL to draw your story on the whiteboard, or would it be just as effective to use pictures and images?

  3. Draw it, even if you suck at drawing (the kids love it). We talked about this in Philadelphia and that is my conclusion, anyway. I’m not an expert on Story Listening. Maybe you could ask Beniko:

    benikomason@gmail.com

If she answers pls. let us know. It’s a great question about a seriously effective (in my view the most effective) foreign language teaching strategy yet invented.

The other teachers on the SL page also said to draw it, so I will. I think it will give more flow, and make it easier for the students to comprehend.

I’ll let you know what Dr. Mason said.

    Thanks.

This is a part of Dr. Beniko Mason’s reply to me regarding Story Listening:

“Drawing at the same time you are talking and the pause is what is necessary for the listeners to process the input they hear.

SL is not a performance. It is to provide rich comprehensible input to students.
It does not look so dramatic or flashy to viewers. It is not a show or entertainment.

It is almost like reading a book with more supports for listeners.”

  6. And SL is perfect for teaching culture, history, you can tell personal stories from your life, describe a cultural figure in the target culture, tell a fable from the culture. SL is the best. Many ppl have trouble bc they want to grade kids on work and all the kids do w SL is enjoy listening. The school zeitgeist of judgement of kids and the serenity of real SAL conflict in this fine strategy.
