One of Anne Matava’s awesome “hogs” is now in college. She wrote to Anne this past week:
Dear Frau,
First of all I hope you enjoyed the great summer we had, and that you are all settled in at school! I feel at home here now, which probably means I have settled in for the most part. German class is challenging, not gonna lie. My professor is the head of the department and really hit the road running with what else but grammar! In class he will say a sentence such as Ich heise Helga, Du……? or Sie…… and then we finish the sentence. I found myself talking out the answers in my head because that was what I am so used to. The homework has been of a similar nature only more difficult. I am grateful for all of the vocabulary and comprehension skills that I have acquired through you. It is because of my advantage in these areas that I will be able to do well and catch up with the grammar. There is one guy in my class who only learned German through his Austrian mother, so I am not the only one who has not learned with grammar exercises. I just wanted to give you a shout out and thank you for your teaching through TPRS. I also wanted you to know my weak points so you can work to incorporate more grammar or not.
Yours,
J
Anne commented to me:
This is what happens to talented TPRS students who test into the higher levels in college. Damn. But it doesn’t say anything that we don’t already know. And this kid is way more diplomatic than most students would be. She’s also more persistent; don’t you think that most students would just give up? She may still do that…
